WHO NEEDS CHANGE?

They must often change, who would be constant in happiness or wisdom.

~ Confucius

Confucius was an ancient Chinese teacher and philosopher who pre-dated Christianity by five centuries. He is one of the most influential and quoted thinkers of all time. In this quote, he teaches us about change. He likely wasn’t the first great thinker to discuss this topic and he certainly won’t be the last. One might conclude, from the plethora of statements and essays about the reality of change, that people just aren’t getting the message. Or is it a message that people would rather not hear? Grow Up And Get Wise!

“So you made a mistake in your past?  Who among us, was never young and stupid at one time or another?  So, you have a few skeletons in your closet…who doesn’t?  I don’t know anyone whose closet is that clean.  Your past does not define who you are now.  It is what you do, and how you live going forward that will ultimately define you and leave a lasting impression on those around you.   When you grow from your mistakes, you have gained that cardinal virtue called wisdom.”

And Where Is Your Happy?

“Happiness resides not in possessions, and not in gold, happiness dwells in the soul.”

~ Democritus

I wouldn’t be surprised if this advice has been given to every generation, worldwide, since antiquity. Democritus is not a modern thinker, but a Greek philosopher from Thrace, in northern Greece, in the 5th century B.C. He is hailed by many as the ancient “Father of Science”. His writings are well known and respected by academics internationally. Continue reading “And Where Is Your Happy?”

It’s Okay… Share Your Happy!

“Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.”

~ Buddha

This well-known quote resonates with me in a powerful way, so I decided to explore the importance of applying it in our day-to-day living. It is a simple concept, yet we often have difficulty living this exhortation to share ourselves with the world. Continue reading “It’s Okay… Share Your Happy!”

Be Adventurous – Choose Life!

“Today I choose life. Every morning when I wake up I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, pain… To feel the freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes and choices – today I choose to feel life, not to deny my humanity but embrace it.”

~Kevyn Aucoin

When I saw this quote, I was attracted by the upbeat philosophy of the author. I realized immediately, that I knew nothing about him. As I researched his life, I discovered he was a makeup artist, photographer and author. What struck me in particular was that he realized he was gay at the age of six! For me, this fact puts the quote above in context. Continue reading “Be Adventurous – Choose Life!”
