What’s Your Style? Thriving Or Surviving?

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”

~ Maya Angelou

These words speak to me about purpose in living and also about how the author intended to accomplish it. In her celebrated life, as an author, civil rights activist, and poet from 1928 to 2014, Maya Angelou was a pioneer among African-American women and an inspiration to the world.

Do You Wake Up In Your Greatness Each Morning?

“If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride – and never quit, you’ll be a winner. The price of victory is high but so are the rewards.”

~ Paul (Bear) Bryant

Paul Bryant, a successful college football coach over many years at the University of Alabama, knew something about what it takes to be a winner. His formula for victory has many familiar elements: dedication, pride, and the courage to persevere and never quit. I read also, that he once said that even after you achieve a particular goal, you don’t quit – you set a new goal and keep working. That last line was important to me because it put the idea of quitting as something a person should never entertain.

Hey! Think For Yourself!

“People tell you the world looks a certain way. Parents tell you how to think. Schools tell you how to think. TV. Religion. And then at a certain point, if you’re lucky, you realize you can make up your own mind. Nobody sets the rules but you. You can design your own life.”

~ Carrie-Anne Moss

We are, to a greater or lesser extent, the products of our society. How could we be otherwise? Carrie-Anne Moss, Canadian actress from British Columbia, claims that we can, indeed, become our own persons.

She rightly points out, that from the time we are born, our parents, families, schools, television, and religion – to name only some societal influences – contribute to the socialization process of each of us. We are socialized in the sense that we are trained to behave in certain ways, so that we may ‘fit in’.

Caution… This Is A No Limits Zone!

“Don’t limit yourself. Many people limit themselves to what they think they can do. You can go as far as your mind lets you. What you believe, remember, you can achieve.”

~ Mary Kay Ash

Every day, we face the reality of making many decisions, some small, others life-changing. Not often are we called upon to make the more consequential choices that can change the course of our life. Are those the only decisions we need to be concerned about? Be Adventurous – Choose Life!

“Today I choose life. Every morning when I wake up I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, pain… To feel the freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes and choices – today I choose to feel life, not to deny my humanity but embrace it.”

~Kevyn Aucoin

When I saw this quote, I was attracted by the upbeat philosophy of the author. I realized immediately, that I knew nothing about him. As I researched his life, I discovered he was a makeup artist, photographer and author. What struck me in particular was that he realized he was gay at the age of six! For me, this fact puts the quote above in context. Continue reading “Be Adventurous – Choose Life!”

Do What You Love – Don’t Settle… EVER!

“The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.”

~ Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs was not only one of the most successful people to impact the 20th and 21st centuries, but he was also the heart and soul of the multinational corporation, Apple Inc. I recall watching him presenting new Apple products on television, and what struck me each time, was that Steve Jobs was enjoying himself as he spoke. He was proud of these products and he loved to talk about them! In effect, he walked his talk. Continue reading “Do What You Love – Don’t Settle… EVER!”

Are You Perfect, Or Just Excellent?

“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.”

~ Vince Lombardi

As one of the more successful coaches in US professional football, I think Vince Lombardi’s experience as a player and a coach taught him something about perfection. When I saw this quote, I stopped to ponder his words carefully. Continue reading “Are You Perfect, Or Just Excellent?”
